JT Bullitt, Artist Bio

Where does language come from? How does meaning emerge from abstract shapes and patterns? In the Dialogue paintings I explore these questions through the use of marks that are inspired by alphabets and scripts, yet are free of any significance beyond what the viewer imposes on them. The calligraphic glyphs and the spaces between them invite a conversation with the viewer, between sound and silence, between language and its opposite. In these paintings I aim both to propose a prototype for language and to offer a glimpse into its fundamental expressive limitations.
